Those Immigrants Get Everything!
A story I have heard many times…
In a small food store in a not-so-great part of town a couple that spoke broken English worked many hours. No matter what time you stopped in there at least one of them was there. Cleaning the floor, stocking the shelves, manning the cash register. And their kids worked there too. Every day after school they were there. Doing whatever needed to be done. And these kids obviously had no idea how to dress. They wore hand me down clothes. They always brought the same boring cheap lunch to school. Rumor had it the whole family lived in a small one-bedroom apartment over the small run-down store. And as if that wasn’t enough people in one place some people believed that there were extended family members living there too.
These people were mocked. “Real” Americans told them they should go home. Told them they should learn “our” language. Why did they come here anyway? What kind of life is it to work so hard all the time, not have nice things, not be able to 100% communicate with people around them, to have so many people stuffed into one small apartment everyday, to eat the same cheap food and wear hand-me-down clothes all the time?
Fast forward a few years. Same immigrants. Many changes have happened. Their English is not as broken. That is a minor change. They now have a wonderful house, a thriving business, great clothes and the best of everything. Some people still mock them. Say they are here because they get hand-outs from the government but they know the truth. They scarified everything short-term to gain so much long-term.
As a “real” American (whatever that means) I urge you to really think about this. These stories are true. You see, these immigrants came to the Unites States to be free. They worked hard for a couple of years and make huge sacrifices. Nothing was going to stand in the way of success. They could have given up. Being mocked constantly, working so hard that they were beyond tired and living in an uncomfortable situation. But they had bigger goals. Bigger dreams.
The point is that in the United States of America we are free and so many of us take it for granted. Immigrants arrive never thinking they will work for 40 years and retire from a company. They arrive thinking they will OWN a company.
It is time to learn from all people. To respect all people.
What is your definition of success? What will you let stand between you and that success?
Think about it. If you live in the United States of America you have every opportunity to be successful. Whatever it is you want to do…Take Action. Happy Independence Day!
